In September 2007 he
was appointed Director of Music at Herne Hill School, a position he held for more than 11 years.
Herne Hill is a well established independent School in South-East London. Its ethos is best summarised by the motto "Herne
Hill School for love, care and an excellent education".
Music and drama have a strong tradition at Herne Hill School and are regarded as central to its ethos. Most of the plays
are tailored for the children by being composed and written in house.
During this time at Herne Hill, Mr. Carles (as everyone used to call him) was solely responsible for the entire musical programme
of the school.
This included teaching music to all 12 classes, musically accompany weekly assemblies, devise and organise classroom assemblies,
internal/external concerts and festivals, and compose/orchestrate the music for all of the school productions
Under his care the school won at the Beckenham Festival annually from 2008 - 2012, twice at the regional Music for Youth (2009
and 2010), and was awarded the Devonside Cup for Best Music and Drama Production at the ISA Nationwide Drama Competition in
In addition, he also supervised all applications and the scheduling of individual instrumental lessons for the children and
was responsible for the peripatetic violin, cello and piano teachers.
